Rail Connection To Parts of French and Italian Alps Resumes

French national rail service SNCF has reinstated the Paris–Milan train line (which had been interrupted due to a landslide in the Maurienne region in August 2023), now offering three trains per day.

This line includes a stop at Oulx station, on the Italian side, about 30 km from Briançon, part of the huge Serre Chevalier Vallée Briançon ski area, after a 4.5-hour journey. The trip to Briançon can then be completed by a shuttle (tickets can only be purchased online via the SNCF or Trainline websites). The Italian company Trenitalia has also been operating this same route since April 1, with two trains per day.

David Chabanal, Director of the Serre Chevalier Vallée Briançon Tourist Office commented:

“The reopening of the Paris–Milan railway line, with a stop at Oulx, is excellent news for our destination. It truly is ‘our’ high-speed line and it strengthens accessibility from Paris and Italy. It’s a real asset for both visitors and local businesses. Thanks to the three daily trains operated by SNCF and the two additional trains by Trenitalia, our destination now enjoys a fast and comfortable connection from Paris in just 4.5 hours. The return of the shuttle service between Oulx and Serre Chevalier via Briançon, operated by Resalp, perfectly complements this offering. This continuity of service is a true advantage for our French and European visitors and fully aligns with our commitment to promoting more sustainable and accessible tourism.”

Details of service for winter 25-26 have not yet been confirmed, however in further good news for future rail travel to the region, the Minister of Transport announced the renewal of night train rolling stock, giving priority to the Paris–Briançon line, along with improvements to the Marseille–Briançon line.
