My Family-Friendly Alpine Escape – InTheSnow

For families who love to ski, the newly revamped Club Med Serre Chevalier is a dream come true. Nestled at the base of one of the largest ski areas in the Southern Alps, this eco-conscious Alpine retreat has transformed itself into the ultimate destination for all-inclusive family ski holidays. With its impeccable location, cutting-edge renovations, and thoughtful family-centric amenities, this resort offers, not only families, but groups and solo travellers a memorable ski trip.

Here’s a closer look at what makes Club Med Serre Chevalier stand out, peppered with my personal experiences.

A Seamless Ski-in, Ski-out Experience

One of the most impressive features of Club Med Serre Chevalier is its ski-in, ski-out access. The resort is located at the foot of a vast 250 km ski area within the stunning Écrins National Park. And don’t worry, there is terrain which is suitable for all levels of skier. I was able to cruise around on long, leisurely blues and reds and when I wanted to push myself a little I found ample challenging terrain the keep me busy.

What impressed me most was the ease of everything—especially when travelling with kids. The ski room and Ski Pro-Shop are spacious and well-organised, making the process of gearing up completely stress-free. The added detail of having my skis pre-loaded in the locker before I arrived felt like a thoughtful touch. Hassle-free holidays are always a win! I was even able to grab a coffee in the boot room before I headed out for the day!

Even better, 80% of slopes are above 2,000m, which means excellent snow coverage, plus the resort enjoys 300 days of sunshine annually. Rarely have I experienced a combination of ideal snow conditions and stunning blue skies— Serre Chevalier really does stand up to its claim!

A Resort That’s Perfect for Families

Club Med Serre Chevalier offers excellent skiing  with thoughtful facilities designed to make your holiday stress-free, well-organised, and truly relaxing. For families wanting support and wrap around care but also adventure and relaxation, this Alpine retreat is one not to be missed out on.

Whether you’re enjoying a fresh, healthy meal, hitting the slopes, or relaxing at the spa while the kids are looked after, staying here feels like a well-earned treat. It’s the little details—like the great food and thoughtful touches—that make this resort such a hidden gem.

Refurb Updates…

Club Med Serre Chevalier recently unveiled several exciting updates, and the result is a resort that does great on modern comfort while retaining its Alpine charm.

  • Refreshed Family Rooms: The resort now features 91 pairs of interconnecting family rooms, designed with comfort and functionality in mind. Bright, cheerful decor inspired by the local sundial motif adds warmth and joy to every day.
  • Petit Club for Under 4s: Parents of younger children can relax knowing their little ones are catered to in the brand-new Petit Club. For older kids, ski lessons and tailored activities ensure fun for all ages.
  • Luxurious Payot Spa: After a long day on the slopes, unwind with a relaxing treatment or take a dip in the indoor pool with panoramic mountain views. I personally recommend the facial treatment—pure bliss!

Dining Done Right

Buffet dining can sometimes become monotonous at all-inclusive resorts, but this is far from the case at Club Med Serre Chevalier. The focus on fresh, healthy meals was a standout for me. The main “Le Vauban” restaurant offers an incredible variety—from locally inspired dishes (think fondue and raclette) to vegetarian options and fresh fish. Each dish is vibrant, well-prepared, and a pleasure to eat. You even get a chance to sip on the local génépi liqueur. While it may not be for everyone, I found it intriguing and well worth trying—when in the Alps!

Not Skiing? No Problem!

If skiing isn’t your family’s sole focus, there’s plenty to explore. The resort offers snowshoeing or fat biking if you fancy a different challenge in the vast outdoors. Guided tours are available and can be arranged via reception.

For a cultural touch, a visit to Briançon, a nearby UNESCO-listed heritage town, is a must. From its fascinating blend of French and Italian influences to the thermal baths at Les Grands Bains du Monêtier, this historic destination offers a lovely break from the slopes.

Sustainability at the Heart of It All

An element of this resort I truly admire is its commitment to sustainability. From using renewable energy and eco-friendly materials to employing efficient waste reduction initiatives, Club Med Serre Chevalier is following through on its promises to the planet. It’s on track to achieve BREEAM certification “Very Good”, so you can enjoy your holiday guilt-free.

Why Club Med Serre Chevalier Stands Out

Having visited numerous ski resorts, Club Med Serre Chevalier has earned a special place in my heart for its balance of Alpine luxury and convenience. While it might be farther from some airports (I flew into Lyon, which was a smooth experience, albeit with a slightly longer transfer thani normally go for at 3 hours), the lack of crowds on the slopes more than makes up for it. Unlike bustling resorts, this destination offers a unique blend of tranquility and lively charm that is truly unparalleled.

What truly sets this destination apart is its focus on family and service. Everything is geared toward making life easier for families—from the seamless ski-in, ski-out design to expert ski lessons with English-speaking instructors from the French Ski School (ESF). The entertainment is optional but inviting, creating a buzz that makes you feel part of something special without feeling obliged to join in.
