Fresh Snowfall in the Alps

There’s been fresh snowfall on high slopes in the Alps today, for many areas the second snowfalls of the past week.

High altitude snowfall in summertime (which is still is by the astronomical measure of the seasons) is not unusual but it still raises anticipation for the ski season ahead.

Austria’s Pitztal Glacier, which posted the picture top this afternoon, will be one of the first to open for the 25-26 season in just three weeks time. Its slopes are country’s highest.

Italy’s Sulden ski area, among the country’s highest and usually one of the first to open in October or early November, also posted fresh snow images.

There are currently just three glacier ski areas open in the Alps, Saas Fee and Zermatt in Switzerland and Passo Stelvio in Italy. Austria’s Hintertux Glacier is usually open for skiing year round but closed temporarily early last month. It says it will reopen this month but hasn’t named a date yet.
